The City of Fairmont Police Department is currently accepting applications for Police Officers. A specific application must be filled out.

Once completed, applications and other required documents must be emailed to the City Clerk at jkeller@fairmontwv.gov or brought in person to the 3rd floor of the J. Harper Meredith Building at 200 Jackson St in downtown Fairmont.

Following the application process, all applicants are required to take the Police Officer Civil Service Exam. The next scheduled exam date is May 19th, 2026, at 6:30 p.m.

Police Officer Civil Service Examination

The Police Officer Civil Service Examination is a two-hour exam dealing with basic knowledge.

  • Ability to follow directions
  • Ability to observe and remember details
  • Ability to problem solve and use logic
  • Ability to use situational judgment
  • Reading comprehension
  • Vocabulary

Physical Ability Test

The successful applicants who pass the written exam will then have to complete and pass a physical examination, whereas each applicant must do:

  • 28 sit-ups in one minute
  • 18 push-ups in one minute 
  • Run 1.5 miles in 14 minutes and 36 seconds or less

Benefits

The benefit package for a new hire Police Officer has a starting salary of $53,597, with a salary of $60,007 after a one-year probation. 

Each Officer will earn 2 weeks' vacation after the first year, 13 to 15 paid holidays per year, and 6 personal days per year after the completion of the probationary period. Each Officer is offered PEIA health Insurance.

The City of Fairmont offers a $10,000 additional monetary incentive for Certified WV Officers.

Fairmont Police Department

The Fairmont Police Department is a 24-hour a day/7 days a week operating department. 

The department consists of 36 sworn officer positions and 8 civilian support staff. All officers receive law enforcement certification through the West Virginia State Police Academy and go through a 16 week Field Training Officer Program. 

Responsibilities

The department answers a wide variety of calls for service, from parking complaints and barking dogs to domestic violence and homicide. We dedicate ourselves to work in partnership with the community to fight crime, reduce fear and improve the quality of life in our neighborhoods.
