FAIRMONT, W.Va. — The candidate filing period for the November 5, 2024, City of Fairmont Municipal Election will begin at 8:30 a.m., July 8th and run through 4:30 p.m., August 7th.
The City Council election, to be held in conjunction with the November 5, 2024, County General Election, will feature races in the City’s 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 7th Districts as well as an unexpired term in the 7th District.
All seats for the election are four-year terms, however, the successful candidate of the 7th District unexpired term will take office at the completion of the canvass of the November 5th election though December 31st. The successful candidate of the 7th District, four-year term, as well as all other four-year terms will take office in January 2025.
Candidates for the four non-partisan seats must be a qualified (registered) voter of the City. They must also be a resident of the City of Fairmont and shall, at the time of their announcement for office and during their term of office, reside within the district from which elected. The term of a Councilmember shall be four years and in no event shall any Councilmember serve more than two consecutive full four-year terms.
Candidates must file in person at the City Clerk’s Office on the Third Floor of the J. Harper Meredith Building (City/County Complex), located at 200 Jackson Street, Room 312. A $15.00 filing fee is required.
The 2nd District, which Anne Bolyard has represented since January 2021, includes Morgantown Avenue, the Suncrest area, Hoult Road, and from Alta Vista Avenue to Morgantown Avenue.
The 4th District, represented by Rick Garcia since January 2021, is the entire Bellview area which also includes Pennsylvania Avenue and the Jackson Addition area.
The 6th District, which Gia Deasy has represented since January 2021, includes Virginia Avenue to Hillcrest Road and from Fairmont State University to Field Street.
The 7th District has been represented by Julie Sole since January 23, 2024. This area includes Fairmont State University to Broadview Avenue, a portion of Locust Avenue, Peacock Lane, Hillside Drive, and the area around Fairmont Senior High School.
